First up, I found an assortment of Patons Astra, a DK weight, 100% acrylic yarn, that I thought would make a sweet little baby blanket. The pattern for this classic granny square is everywhere, and it’s fun to explore the possibilities with different borders and color combinations. This blanket is not particularly big, measuring only 26″ x 32″, which makes it perfect for the car seat or stroller.
I have only one recommendation if you decide to give this blanket a try: do not use this yarn. Although I am not a huge fan of acrylic yarn, I recognize that its wash-ability sometimes makes it a good choice for babies and children. If you go with acrylic yarn, there are better options, such as Berroco Comfort DK…a much softer choice. I have used Patons yarns in the past, and have been pleased with the results, but not this time. As pretty as I think this blanket is, it lacks that soft and silky feel. Here’s the pattern I used for the picot edge: chain 3, yo, pull up a loop in the first chain, yo and pull through three loops on hook, secure with slip-stitch to every other chain on the edge.
If you’ve got a stash of yarn that haunts you when you see it, give the granny square a go…the choices are endless!!
