Valentine’s Day will be here in a few weeks, and I am eager to “show the love” by displaying my new crocheted paper heart garland.  It was a fun project and easy to make!  I simply traced hearts onto pretty card stock papers, punched small holes around the edges, and crocheted a decorative border.  Not too complicated, but you do need some basic crochet skills.

And, since I know YOU CAN DO THIS, I thought I’d share the process:

1.  Trace two hearts onto the back of your card stock, and cut them out with a scissor.  I traced a heart-shaped cookie cutter that measures 5″ across (at the widest part) and 4 1/4″ from top point to bottom point.  Stick the wrong sides of the two hearts together, at the center, with double-sided tape.

2.  Using a 1/8″ hole punch, punch holes around the outer edge:  (I didn’t mark or measure these)

3.  Starting approx. 1″ from the bottom point, attach size 3 cotton crochet threadChain two, and begin single crochet in each hole, using a US B1/2.25 mm hook.  Depending on the hole spacing, crochet 1, 2 or 3 chains between each single crochet, or as many as you need to have the stitches lay flat around the edge:

4.  Continue with chain stitch and single crochet around the heart.  To ease the turn at the bottom point: sc, ch 1, sc, ch 1, sc into the bottom hole.  At the end of the round, slip stitch to the beginning ch-2.

5.  Chain 1 and complete one round of single crochet around the heart.  There are no real rules here.  The goal is to keep the edging flat, so use as many single crochet stitches as you need to keep the edge flat and smooth*.

6.  At the end of the round, slip stitch into the first single crochet and begin the picot edging.  If you’d like the picot edge to be a different color, attach the new color now:

Make as many as you’d like:IMG_4725

and then stitch them together, using a yarn needle threaded with the crochet cotton.  Secure edge-to-edge using a whip stitch, or thread a bead onto the needle before securing the second edge.  I strung a 16 mm red, wooden bead between each heart:

As a finishing touch, I doubled the crochet thread and made a chain loop for hanging:

You can make this garland with just about any size heart and, if you use a larger hole punch, you can use worsted weight yarn.  Since they work up in a jiffy, there’s still PLENTY of time to make one before Valentine’s Day!

On your mark….get set….

*Sometimes, try as I might, that edging just wanted to curl inward a bit.  Enter:  my trusty iron.  I touched the edging with the hot iron (on the wrong side) and it fell right into place!
