I went blueberry picking (for the very first time!) a couple of weeks ago with my friends, Carol and Lisa. We visited the Evergreen Berry Farm in the beautiful Litchfield Hills of Connecticut, on a hot and sunny afternoon. We hung the clear pails around our necks, toted the buckets they provided and headed off to one of the lush berry fields.
I was a little slow at first. Too “picky”. But once I got going, I found it to be a rather peaceful experience. Picking, filling the pail, chatting through the bushes…being on the lookout for critters and spiders. And when we weighed-in, I’d picked about 4 lbs. Much less than Lisa and Carol, but they had “experience”.
I froze most of the berries when I got home and, today, I decided to bake Rich’s favorite (Blueberry Pie) and bring it for dessert to Bob & Linda’s tonight!
Not the prettiest pie, but I’m hoping it tastes good! I used a new recipe. The only change I made was to make an egg wash (1 egg yolk, 1 tbsp. cream), brush it on top, and I sprinkled on a little granulated sugar. Oh, and one other change. Sometimes I make my own pie crust. Sometimes I don’t. This one was Pillsbury’s Refrigerated Pie Crust. (It’ll be fine!)
I love having the berries in the freezer, and I really wish I had picked more. Next year, I’ll aim for 10 lbs. And, no. I’m not going to let the “boa constrictor” which crossed our path on the way back from the field, and made Carol and I scream like we’d been thrown into a snake pit, deter me one bit. I’ll just be sure to have Lisa (the Secret Service) walking right next to me (the President)!
