I saw this blanket at the Crochet Again blog, and there was never any doubt that I would make one.  I just loved her take on the traditional granny square and, as luck would have it, the yarn colors in my bottomless stash allowed me to recreate her stunning combination.

I crocheted 16 blocks, sewed them together, and then added this border:

Basically, it consists of:  Row 1:  granny stitch around, Rows 2 & 3:  single crochet, Row 4: granny stitch, Rows 5 – 9:  single crochet, Row 10:  picot stitch

The border measures two inches, adding 4 inches around overall.  The finished blanket measures 34″ x 34″.

The yarn I used was Lion Brand, Vanna’s choice, which is 100% acrylic.  I’m not a yarn snob, by any means, but I wish I had completed this in washable wool.  Although acrylic can be a good choice for baby items, there are washable, natural fiber alternatives that I think I’ll choose for future projects.

If you’re inspired to give this blanket a try,  Crochet Again has an easy to follow, step-by-step tutorial for completing the squares.  Check it out!

You’re way too nice, Kris 😉 As always, summer blew by WAY too quickly, and it’s time to think apples and pumpkins. I’d love to share some coffee and see what you’ve been up to. Let’s see if we can make it happen!

I am so deeply touched by this special award, which came as a wonderful surprise!! Thank you, Katherine, for leading the way by being such a “good neighbor” to your fellow bloggers, and for sharing your support and talent with your readers. Fondly, Ann

Beautiful work! I love that old granny traditions get a new buzz and some updates to the patterns. Nice blog, and it is all thanks to Katherine and her “Good Neighbor Award” that I found this lovely source of inspiration! Have a nice week!

Thanks to Katherine, I, too, have discovered so many nice blogs (your’s included!). I was thrilled to find this free granny pattern on Ravelry. It’s a great use of stash yarns, and it works up quickly. Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to comment!

I saw your blanket on Pinterest and wanted to stop by and say that it is absolutely gorgeous! I love the colors that you chose. I just recently took up crocheting and can’t wait to make one myself.

I found the pattern on Ravelry, and it was designed by Sue Rivers. The blanket that she featured combined similar colors and provided the inspiration for my baby blanket. I changed her pattern just a wee bit by adding a border.

Thank you, so very much, for your kind words and for taking the time to comment. As a new crocheter, you might want to check in on Lucy at attic24.typepad.com. She has some very colorful projects and lots of easy tutorials. Good luck with crochet…there are so many wonderful patterns and choices, I’m sure you’re going to have lots of fun.

I stumbled across your afghan on Pinterest and I am in LOVE with it!!! I think this one tops my FAVS list. I know you said that Vanna’s Choice yarn was used, but can you tell me what colors? I would love to make this EXACT afghan! Thank you for selecting colors that are absolutely delicious together.

Thanks so much for the lovely compliment! I have been digging through my stash, trying to locate the Lion Brand wrappers. Additionally, I checked the Lion Brand website to be sure that the colors were still available. All but one are confirmed:
Angel White, Aqua, Pink Poodle, Duckie, Light Spring Green and (possibly) Cheery Cherry. Since I cannot locate the wrapper for the red yarn, I cannot be totally certain, but I think Cheery Cherry would look great!

Glad that you loved the color combination, and I cannot wait to hear how yours works out! Thank you, again, and if I can be of further help, just let me know!

If you click on the words “Crochet Again” in my text (right before the word “blog”), it will take you directly to the pattern. There is a red underline beneath those two words that provide the link to the pattern site. Also, if you are a member of Ravelry, you can do a pattern search for Modern Mitered Granny Square by Sue Rivers. The link to the free pattern is available there also.

      Hope this helps!
